Fields of Expertise

The “Future Mobility Region” initiative focuses on six areas of expertise, which were defined in a location study by the Fraunhofer Institute — with the focus on further strengthening the location and securing it in international competition.

Simulation & digital twin

Save costs and speed up development — competitive technologies can only be brought to market by consistently integrating digitization into the entire development process. The digital twin shows right from the start whether the planned components work together ideally, whether there is a need for optimization and what needs to be considered in production in the future.

power electronics

Highly efficient power electronics and intelligent controls for electric vehicle drives are necessary to increase efficiency, power density, reliability and safety.

Energy storage & electric drives

The development towards electric drives, which require new competencies and must be optimally coordinated with the appropriate energy storage systems, are the core competencies for new vehicle concepts. Electrical machines, transmissions, batteries and fuel cells are the main value-adding components.

material technologies

Sustainable, affordable, intelligent: Material technology makes a significant contribution to meeting these characteristics in the context of mobility. Vehicles must become ever lighter and remain affordable at the same time. However, new materials and combinations of materials must also be increasingly used in terms of recyclability.

Test & inspection infrastructure

Electrification, automated driving and new forms of energy place high demands on the test and inspection infrastructure. The network has broad availability of capacity and know-how to carry out industry-compliant tests. In addition, leading players from industry and research are cooperating to continuously expand this offering.

Prototyping Lab

Creating an approvable prototype from a digital twin requires a deep understanding of vehicle construction. It is also important to consider the conclusions for subsequent industrialization, small series or volume production and to develop the right concepts. People, infrastructure and knowledge go hand in hand in the “Future Mobility Region.”
